The Old Vicarage School

Babies and parents from Spondon Toddler Group enjoyed a fantastic morning unwrapping new toys for the baby zone area and joining in with rhymes and songs, thanks to the pupils of the Old Vicarage School in Darley Abbey.

Establishing their first fund

The pupils, staff and PTA of the Old Vicarage School have established a fund with Foundation Derbyshire, to make small grants to local community groups. The Oakwood Evergreens were the first group to be selected for an Award in 2010, the group which supports older isolated residents used the grant for room hire and refreshments.

Over 40 Evergreen members were treated to poetry readings, duologues and trumpet, clarinet and recorder solos, before rounding off the afternoon with a sing a long with school’s fabulous ukulele band

Matthew Adshead, Headmaster of the Old Vicarage School, was delighted to be able to support the Oakwood Evergreens in this way. “It is a privilege for the children to be able to meet the people that the fund supports and see the impact that not only money, but also their time and talents, can have on other people”, he explained. ”

In December 2011 the group selected Spondon Toddler group who were over the moon to receive lots of new toys and equipment for their newly developed baby zone. Pupils visited the parents and babies who enjoyed unwrapping their gifts and then everyone joined in for rhymes and songs! Spondon Toddler Group has been running for 25 years and caters for up to 70 local families bringing together new mums and allowing children to socialise and have fun.

Barry Liggett from Spondon Toddler Group explained what a difference the new toys would make, “increasingly more and more mums are bringing babies under one and our equipment for them was really limited. This new baby zone is wonderful as the toys really stimulate and engage them. We are so grateful to the Old Vicarage School for their early Christmas present to us and for being so open to support small local groups like us”
