Awarded a £1,000 grant in 2019 from our Hall Family Fund, this grant to support the Ashford in the Water Social group, aimed at reducing isolation in farming communities, shows how a relatively small grant aimed at the right service can make a significant difference in our rural communities.

I think smaller charities are overlooked as they don’t seem to have the biggest voice. Often they are run with minimal staff, trying to keep costs down but the service they provide really makes a difference. Small, local charities are a lifeline for some and the support they give could really change someone’s life.

The Ashford social group continues to develop strong relationships, fostering new social bonds and a sense of community. They have been able to support one another through difficult times, even through the turmoil of the last 9 months Most members live in very rural communities and look forward to spending time sharing memories. The group gives structure, a focal point and something to look forward to, all of which are essential to those who might otherwise be alone.

When someone is not here it’s really nice that others in the group will give them a ring or go and visit them – just to make sure they are ok.

The meetings get us out each week, it’s great meeting up with others. I’ve made so many good friends over the years

The future, as we progress through managing and living with the current pandemic, will continue to create a challenging environment for this charity and the Derbyshire residents it supports.

I think this group will be needed more than ever helping people back safely into society and reconnecting with friends old and new.
