Overcoming addiction can be a huge challenge and being in recovery can be equally challenging.
Hope Springs Recovery Centre opened in December 2012 following the identification of a gap in the services on offer in Derbyshire. It is the only Recovery Centre in Derbyshire and one of only 5 in the UK.
Local statistics graphically reveal the problem. In Chesterfield, over 3,000 people were admitted to hospital because of alcohol abuse compared to the national average of 1,891. Many of those admitted were under 21. Addiction can demolish family lives and erode communities and therefore reducing its use is of vital importance.
A grant of £1,000 was awarded to this group during its first few months of operation, providing a small but crucial lifeline during its set-up and development.
The grant was invaluable at a time when we had very few funds to pay the bills. It provided both a much-needed morale boost when, as a new community group it was hard to access grant aid, and it also helped to secure more funding because we had the backing of the Foundation.
Small grants such as this one can be the difference between success and failure for a new group.
