The fund will support a broad cross-section of projects and a wide variety of groups. It hopes to improve the quality of life for Derbyshire residents and tackle inequalities and disadvantages faced in local communities.
Many applications taken forward to the Ashby Fund do not fit within the Foundation’s other grant-making streams due to geographical or thematic restrictions. Therefore the Ashby Fund is vital in plugging funding gaps in our county.
Type of Project costs funded
- Capital (any items of equipment) including refurbishment/building work
- If the building/refurbishment is largescale you will need to identify a specific item your £2,000 would purchase or contribute towards.
- Revenue (any non-equipment costs) including ongoing running costs for a project or group
- One-off events and one-off projects
Priorities
There is a preference to support groups operating in rural areas or projects focusing on heritage and arts & culture.

Individual Bursaries
The Ashby family are currently reviewing priorities for their fund and future grant-making. It is possible that they will decide to concentrate solely on supporting community and voluntary groups rather than individuals. For this reason, we are putting a hold on individual applications to the fund until we can confirm the position – this page will be updated accordingly.
If you are looking for funding support as an individual you may be eligible to apply to the John Weston Fund, which is currently the only other fund at the Foundation to accept individual applications. Some restrictions apply.
Closing Dates
There are no fixed closing dates. The decision-making panel meet four times per year.
Examples of grants made
- £2,000 to a village hall to install new central heating to create a use-able meeting space
- £1,000 to purchase new toys for a parent & toddler group in an isolated rural community
- £1,700 for guide booklets exploring a new industrial heritage walk in the peak district
- £2,000 for a mental health support group to buy in I.C.T training
- £1,800 to cover transport costs for members of a disability group
