In April 2024 the Bakewell and District Fund helped to cover the costs of running the village’s weekly community hub
Initially set up as a “Warm Hub” in November 2022, crucial funding from you has led to the continuation of the hub all year round; funding that has been instrumental in allowing the hub to grow and thrive – it’s a simple but impactful concept.
The community hub, which is open every Tuesday morning, incorporates a parent/ toddler group and a craft group, as well as welcoming those who come for a drink/snack and some company.
“We are very proud of the multi-generational aspect of our hub and believe it to be a major strength. Funding means we never charge anyone for anything at the hub although we do leave a ‘donations bucket’ in the kitchen should anyone feel able to help”
Attendees now total between 20 and 30 regularly every week including Mums/toddlers (c.10-15) and other people of all ages (c.10-20), particularly including the older generation of Rowsley. Some weeks they can have as many as 50 attendees in total.
“I have been to other Mother and Toddler groups but felt uncomfortable because people were in their own small groups but here everyone talks to you and I feel very welcome.”
The Social Prescriber told us that this person (recently bereaved) was very nervous of coming because they wouldn’t know what to say to anyone but the person themselves told us later “I immediately felt welcome and lots of people came to chat to me”.
“I love coming because I know I will always get a lovely cup of tea and some breakfast if I want it.”
The feedback the volunteer team receive on a regular basis is that the service is invaluable for local residents. The multi-generational aspect is particularly appreciated and enjoyed. The Hub also offers assistance and a friendly ear regarding day-to-day challenges and concerns. Recently, one of their volunteers was able to offer some reassurance to one of their regular users around concerns regarding starting a new job.
” Please thank the donors, tell them they can be sure that the Hub offers real value to the community and helps people with genuine needs.
By the time the Foundation Derbyshire monies came through we had exhausted all other funding avenues, so it was a godsend to receive it and keep us running.”
The last year has seen the community hub strengthen its local offer, providing a consistent, friendly space – one which allows local residents to form authentic connection and a sense of belonging.
Sessions over the year have included:
- Talks from the local Police and Bakewell and Eyam Community Transport,
- Free workshops from Yoga teachers and Arts in the Peak
- Summer Holiday sessions
- Donations of refreshments and fresh bakes from the local post office and toys and activities from Bakewell Dance
